Discover the Swedish emigrant history guided by the Swedish-American Line´s Sea-Captain John Nordlander. You will hear about the emigrants´ experiences, from the time they leave their homeland to the time of reaching the harbour in the New World. Hear about the famous emigrants Karl-Oskar and Kristina, from the book Utvandrarna (The Emigrants) by author Vilhelm Moberg.
Listen to stories about the farmers´ life and fate as they decide to move to America. The tour is located in Ljuder socken (Ljuder Parish) in the area called "Utvandrarbygden" (Emigrant region), known from the Emigrant books by Moberg. Learn about the 1800s, the Swedish settlers, Swedish emigration to America, and the local history of Ljuder Parish.
The tour is open all year around.

Ljuder (Sweden´s most famous parish)
- Listen to Karl-Oskar as he shares stories of the hard life as a farmer in Småland, see the house where the filming took place, experience the 1800s, and hear about Moberg and his Emigrant books. The journey to America begins!
Duvemåla (the famous village, an inspiration for Moberg and the character Kristina)
- Learn about the village of Duvemåla, Moberg´s grandmother, and of the influence they had on the author as he came up with the lead character Kristina, Karl-Oskar´s dear wife. Visit the house of the four Rundqvist siblings, farmers who lived a very primitive life. Find out about the big treasure that was found in their house after they had passed away.
Moshultamåla (the birthplace of Wilhelm Moberg)
- Visit Moberg´s birthplace and listen to how it all began, his childhood, his early years as a journalist and editor. See the school where Moberg was a student.
Moshultamåla skola (Moberg´s old school)
- See the school Vilhelm Moberg attended as a young boy. Hear the stories about his passion for books and for reading and writing. Listen to Karl-Oskar as he recites/dramatizes some of Moberg´s plays and books.
Korpamoen (the house that became the home of Karl-Oskar and Kristina Nilsson)
- Visit the "real" house of Karl-Oskar and Kristina. Listen to Karl-Oskar as he shares about his hard life here and why he and so many left for America, in search of a better life.
Åkerby vägskäl (the emigrant assembly place for further travel to America)
- Experience the Åkerby road crossing. A place along the road where all the emigrants gathered as they started their journey to the New World. Listen to the dangers of traveling alone and why the farmers journeyed together to the sea port of Karlshamn.
Ljuder (Sweden´s most famous parish)
- Hear about the parish where the characters in the Utvandrarna (the Emigrants) all came from. Hear about Karl-Oskar & Kristina´s life in America, and see the "America-room", an exhibition of Swedish emigrants to America. See the beautiful buildings in the historic park, and visit the Ljuder church from 1844.
